After the interview

Below are a few suggestions on actions to take after the interview and how to make the best use of your interview experience.

1. Immediately after the interview, make notes about the information you gathered, in particular about the company’s needs and expectations. Write down the names of people you met.

2. Note what went well and what did not. Reflect on how you would have changed the interview if you could - time of day, opening remarks, listening, enthusiasm, your questions, your answers.

3. Write down questions that gave you trouble. Write out answers to questions you perceive as being particularly difficult.  Certainly your responses shouldn’t be “canned” or memorised but the process of putting your responses on paper will help you evaluate and organise the most effective answers.

4. Follow up with a thank-you letter within 24 hours after the interview.  It is estimated only one in four people observes this basic courtesy.  It is an excellent way to be remembered even while your competition is being interviewed.
