Cover letter

Cover letter is simply an introduction to the resume reader.

There is no one formula for writing a great cover letter. It depends on what's expected in your field, the industry and the sector — for instance, government positions generally require a detailed cover letter that sets out how you meet the selection criteria. It also depends on you and the approach you are taking to your job hunt.

The key objectives of a cover letter are to:

  • Inform employer of your interest in the job
  • Persuade employer of your suitability for the job
  • Make you look professional
  • Demonstrate your writing and research skills
  • Offer a little window into your personality
  • Make employer want to read your resume

Structure of a Cover letter

Introduction

Begin your letter by identifying the newspaper, magazine, journal or website, the date of the advertisement, position title, job reference number etc. If you are responding by e-mail then consider using an eye-catching subject line that includes the job or reference number.

Body

The body of the letter must answer the question: “Why should an employer select you”? Describe how your qualifications, experience and accomplishments meet the job requirements stated in the advertisement. Choose the most relevant points from the following list to include in your resume:

  • your career objective
  • your education levels and qualifications
  • an example of your transferable skills and competencies
  • your relevant technical knowledge of the job duties
  • personal traits e.g. communication skills, leadership skills
  • a relevant point from your resume e.g. particular experience
  • your specific knowledge of the company
  • do not mention any part of the job for which you do not qualify
  • include additional information such as relevant community or professional activities

Conclusion

Conclude your letter positively by stating that you look forward to a meeting. State when you are available for an interview and the best way to contact you. For example:

  • Although my application will give you some idea of my qualifications, I would appreciate an interview so you can see how I would best contribute to your organisation.
  • I am looking forward to meeting you and learning more about your organisation and the challenges of the position you advertise.

With an open advertisement, take the responsibility for following up by giving a time when you will call to arrange an appointment for a meeting.
