Published market

Part of your job market is relatively easy to identify because it is published.  These are the job opportunities you find in the newspaper or online advertisements, internet sites, trade publications any other possible information sources.  In each case:

  • a job already exists and has been described in terms of title, responsibilities and pay range
  • it is open
  • the employer is actively seeking candidates to screen and interview

Only about one third of your employment opportunities will show up in the published job market!

Types of Job advertisements

Job advertisements are placed by employers, employment agencies and search firms. There exist two main types of advertisements: open and blind.

Open advertisement

  • a company identifies itself in an advertisement
  • advertisement lists not only requirements of an individual employer but also includes employer’s contact details

Advantages:

  • an opportunity to research the company and make inquiries about the job
  • customise your job application to the requirements stated
  • an opportunity to follow up or even to develop an inside contact

Blind advertisement

  • no company name is included
  • responses are directed to a box number or unidentifiable address
  • can be used by employers only to find out how many job seekers in the area meet their needs

Disadvantages:

  • difficult to customise your job application
  • no opportunity to follow up or use contacts
  • less likelihood your response will be acknowledged
  • advertiser might be your employer!

Australian job search websites

The majority of the published job market can be found on these sites. This is not an exhaustive list - often many professional associations will also have job boards so please refer to your relevant association.
