Recruitment agencies

Employment agencies, recruitment consultants and search firms are all part of the published job market.  They are alike in that employers who have existing specific needs and existing job openings pay them to help locate qualified employees. A recruiter’s task is to sell his services to potential clients and then complete assignments on behalf of those clients. Your task is to find a job that suits you.

You generally contact recruiters and search firms by sending them your resume with a covering letter.

Be aware of the following myths about recruitment companies:

  • Recruiters find jobs for people: No. Recruiters find people for jobs not jobs for people
  • Recruiters are always looking for candidates: No. Sending your unsolicited resume to a recruitment firm is unlikely to produce good results.
  • Consultants know where all the job vacancies are: No. Nobody does. You are just as likely as a recruiter to discover job vacancies if you look.

In selecting which recruitment companies to contact, consider the following:

  • Geographical areas they serve
  • Industries or sub-industries they specialise in
  • Types (s) of jobs they fill
  • Size of the firm
  • Job level(s) at which they do their recruiting

Recruiters are accustomed to controlling situations and providing only limited information. When working with them, you must maintain control of your own search.
