Things to avoid at the interview

1. Overt signs of nervousness, such as giggling, fidgeting or squirming. People are usually nervous during interviews but you can control the amount of nervousness you display.

2. Criticism of past employer/s or the performance of any employee.

3. Arguing. But you can speak confidently keeping the discussion friendly and open.

4. Showing irritation with delays or interruptions even if you are irritated.

5. Apologizing or being defensive over things you can’t change and for which you are not responsible (your age, education, employment history etc).

6. Pretend to know everything. Admit if there is something you don’t know. No one is totally knowledgeable.

7. Expressions such as “like” and “you know” and too many “er’s” and “uh’s”. Take your time to think before you speak.

8. Underestimating the influence of a receptionist, HR employee or some other non-decision maker. View this individual as someone who may have influence with the hiring manager.
